Printed Page Length Adjustment

The default top and bottom margin settings for all standard reports assume printing with a laser printer. Most laser printers allow the printing of 60 lines of text at 6 lines per inch. However, some inkjet printers need more top/bottom margin space and so cannot print 60 lines. In those cases, the default top/bottom margin settings (which determine the printed page length) call for too many lines to be printed on the page (usually just one too many), and this overflow gets printed on a separate page by itself. To correct this annoying circumstance, use this option to adjust the printed page length.

Usually, the desired adjustment is to reduce the number of lines printed on a page. Try making this adjustment by adding just one line of adjustment at a time, and then do a test printing. A good way to test this is by using the demo files, and printing the performance appraisal for Janet Crowther.

On the dialog box for this option, the total number of current adjustment lines is shown, and also whether it is a + (lines added) or - (lines reduced) adjustment. Whatever number of lines you enter in the field provided will be added (or subtracted - depending on your selection of "add" or "reduce") to the current number.

Whatever adjustment you make is recorded in the initialization (".INI") file, so that it will apply to all future printing until you change it again. In other words, you won't have to go through this adjustment process every time you want to print a report.

Horizontal Alignment

Overprinting Correction: - Printhead Point Multiplier

If you find that the horizontal positioning of text elements is incorrect - some text is printing on top of other text - it is because the dot resolution of your printer is smaller than standard. The result is that when your printer's printhead is told to "move 300 dots to the right" to start printing a field, if your printer's resolution is 600 dots per inch instead of 300, then it will move only half as far to the right as a 300 dots-per-inch printer. That would cause the field to print on top of another field printed within the first inch of the line.

To correct this problem, first print a test pattern by going to File/Printing Position Adjustments and then clicking on the <Print Test Grid> button. A one page printout will show a line followed by an "M" (for multiplier) near the top of the page. Underneath, a row of numbers will be printed. Whatever number in this row appears directly under the "M" above is the Printhead Point Multiplier to be entered in the field to the right of the Test Grid button. After entering the multiplier number, press <Okay> and then reopen the dialog and print the Test Grid again. This time, the number "1" in the second row should line up under the "M" above, and the overprinting problem on reports will be solved.

Graphics Alignment

The test printout that you get on your printer when you click on the <Print Test Grid> button will also print two horizontal lines that should line up horizontally. If they don't then graphics will not print with the correct alignment in relation to text. This can be corrected by entering a Graphics Alignment correction factor in tenths of an inch. The correction should be entered according to the instructions on the test printout.
